Applying Intelligent Design Mathematics to Biology

25 December 2007 No Comment

This blurb is from Intelligent Design by William Dembski (foreward by Michael Behe) (p.268-270)

Specified Complexity does indeed apply to biology. In fact it applies better to biology than it does to some of the toy examples considered in chapter 5.

imageInteresting. Then Dembski goes on to talk about splattering ink on a page, and the chances of making a short phrase from Hamlet using this technique. Why cannot design detection be applied to biology as it can to testing ink patterns? Dembski argues it can; in fact it is much simpler in biology because there are fewer degrees of freedom than ink on paper. e.g. ink on paper could result in certain letter spacing, certain fonts, italics versus bold, and so on. Amino acids, proteins and DNA have better defined building blocks.

The last paragraph reads:

Mathematicians have not muscled into the biologists’ domain. Rather biologists have uncovered certain facts to which mathematics applies. The application of mathematics to these facts has been unsettling for some biologists. Even so, the proper response of biologists is to meet this challenge of mathematics head on. The wrong response is to keeps oneself uninformed about mathematics, assert that mathematics is largely irrelevant to the biological enterprise ad continue business as usual. Disdain for mathematics does nothing to foster scientific inquiry. Mathematics does indeed elucidate biological complexity. It is the ignorance or dogmatism to claim otherwise.

If find this piece by Dembski fascinating for this reason: mathematics, however irrelevant you may have found it from your school days, is an enormously powerful tool for almost everything in 21st century life. Airplanes and cars, toilets, wiring, electronics and so on are modelled using mathematics. So why should biology be exempt? Arrogant biologists (Waddington, Mayr, p.268) opposed mathematical application in 1966. Their attitude: evolution is a fact thus the mathematics must be wrong. This is laughable. Biologists should have some math training so they can at least have a go at defending themselves from ID Rising :-)
